Awards
The prize was established in 1988 with a generous gift from the late Edith R. Bullock, who was a member of Alaska’s Territorial House of Representatives, Territorial Senate, the ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å Board of Regents, ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å Foundation Board of Directors, Alaska Business Hall of Fame and an Alaskan of the Year.
Submit nominations below or email a complete nomination packet to Dory Straight at dory.straight@alaska.edu. Only complete nominations will be considered.
Nomination process:
Any student, faculty, alumni, staff member, or volunteer who has made a significant contribution to further the university’s mission of “inspiring learning, and advancing and disseminating knowledge through teaching, research, and public service" is eligible for nomination. The prize includes a $20,000 award.
The selection committee will base its decision primarily on three criteria:
- The extent to which the individual demonstrates a specific, definable, notable accomplishment that benefits the university (establishment of an academic or administrative program, the development of a course, the successful completion of a project, the achievement of a research discovery, the provision of a needed university or public service, the achievement of national recognition, etc).
- The extent to which the individual demonstrates general support of the university through service, advocacy or philanthropy.
- Any student, faculty, staff member, or volunteer, regardless of longivity within the ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å system, who has furthered the university’s mission can be nominated. Most important is the impact of the nominee's work on the university and the broader community.

The Harold T. Caven Professorship in Business and Finance was established in 1974 with a generous memorial gift from Mrs. Loretta Caven. Harold came to Alaska in 1943 and served as a director and vice president of First National Bank of Anchorage (now First National Bank Alaska). The award allows a faculty member to extend and expand the university system's business and finance research and outreach activities throughout Alaska.
Candidates will be evaluated based on:
- Achievements through research and creative endeavors, scholarship or creative works, teaching, or professional service during the previous three calendar years and
- How proposed activities benefit the university.
Application process:
Proposals for the award will be accepted from faculty members in business and finance
within the university system. Applicants who have evident leadership in the financial
community, either practically or academically, are preferred.
Proposal Focus
Proposals should focus on building partnerships with businesses, corporations, NGO's and state and local government entities to:
- provide experiential learning and internship opportunities for students, or;
- develop pathways for employees to advance to degree completion efficiently while continuing to work, or;
- develop and advance curriculum that provides stronger insight into the corporation structures, business operations, and laws of the ANCSA regional and village corporations.
Caven Professorship Criteria
Proposals Accepted: Jan. 9 - April 4, 2025
The term of the professorship commences at the beginning of the academic year and
will continue until the end of the second calendar year. Any proposals time stamped
after midnight of the deadline date will be dismissed. All proposals will be submitted
to a selection committee comprising qualified professionals who will select the top
candidate proposals to forward to the ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å president for final selection.
