Vice President & Chief Academic Officer finalists named

The search committee has recommended finalists to President Pitney for a successor for Vice President Paul Layer, who plans to retire after a 35-year career at ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°åF and ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å. The finalists visited Fairbanks in October to meet with university leadership, system office academic affairs staff and governance liaisons. The finalists’ dialogs with governance liaisons were available as Zoom webinars for faculty, staff and students (ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å login required).

Laurie Shanderson is the founder and CEO of Accreditation Insights. She previously served as the chancellor of Methodist College, founding dean of the School of Health Sciences at Northcentral University, and associate and assistant dean of the School of Health Sciences at Stockton University. She earned a Ph.D, in Health Services Administration from Walden University, an MPA in Health Administration from Pace University, and a BA in Health and Human Services at the State University of New York Buffalo.

Brian Smentkowski currently serves as the founding director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Idaho, where he also serves as professor of political science. He previously served as the director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence at Queens University of Charlotte; director of programming, faculty and academic development at Appalachian State University, and as a faculty member and associate dean at Southeast Missouri State University. He earned a Ph.D. and MA in political science from the University of Kentucky and a BA in American politics from Marshall University.
