Legislature Continues Work on Budget while Examining State's Fiscal Picture

The third week of the 2025 legislative session saw continued hearings on the FY26 budget, as well as presentations focused on the challenging fiscal environment the state is facing. Lawmakers, particularly those on each of the finance committees, are grappling with the news that previous budget balancing methods may not be sufficient to cover costs in the upcoming fiscal year.

Since January 20, 2025, Executive Orders and other guidance issued represent a shift in federal priorities. These changes can potentially impact awarded projects and those awaiting funding from federal agencies or sponsors. ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å Reaches Tentative Agreement on New Agreement with UNAC Bargaining Team

The TA'd agreement includes substantially higher salary minimums for all UNAC members, and across-the-board increases of 2.75%, 3%, and 3.25% for FY26, FY27, and FY28, respectively. It also maintains the status quo employee health benefit cost share of 82% employer, 18% employee.

One of Alaska's greatest adventurers, Clyde "Slim" Williams, used this now-obscure format in 1955 to record his life's wildest stories--his travels by dog team, his encounters with Indigenous communities, and his advocacy for an Alaska Highway long before it was built. With more than 16,000 audio recordings, the ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°åF Oral History Collection captures the voices and stories of Alaska's past. Many of these recordings--including Slim's--are available to explore online.
